Brodie Seger – Canadian Alpine Skier

Helmet4Hope Annual Fundraiser

In partnership with the ALS Society of BC

What is Helmet4Hope?

Helmet4Hope is an annual artwork competition with the goal of spreading awareness and raising money for those affected by ALS.  Contestants are asked to create a design using symbolism reflecting the battle against the disease of ALS, such as the blue cornflower.  The winning design will be featured on Brodie’s racing helmet throughout the World Cup season, and comes with an additional prize!

Why ALS?

The disease of ALS entered my life about twelve years ago when my father, Mark, received the grave diagnosis.  With no known cure and a life expectancy of 2-5 years, it’s the kind of news that drains the hope from patients and families.  I’m fortunate to be able to say my dad is still with us today, but his battle has been nothing short of trying.  His positive attitude and desire to live every day to the maximum in the face of the inevitable decline have been an inspiration to so many in our circle.  In that spirit, I wanted to find a way to raise money and contribute to the cause myself.  This is where Helmet4Hope was born.

It’s often said that ALS is not a rare disease, but an underfunded one.  Recent trends such as the 2014 ALS ice bucket challenge proved how increased awareness and funding can make a great difference, and there have since been promising advancements with experimental drugs, research, and clinical trials.  The funds raised through Helmet4Hope are directed towards patient services programs and research through ALSBC’s Project Hope at the University of British Columbia.
